EDU 950 Tech with ELL
This course addresses the use of technology to enhance language acquisition across the curriculum for English Learners (ELs). Background knowledge of various types of English Learners is presented to help give all teachers a better perspective of this diverse group. Curated websites and technology tools equip teachers to better personalize learning and prepare lesson adaptations for ELs at their appropriate grade level and English Language Proficiency (ELP). Teachers leave the course with their own technology toolbox for teaching and assessing not only ELs, but all students.
The purpose of this course is to develop the use of technology as a tool to enhance language acquisition associated with English as a Second Language. Course contents include technology tools to assist students and teachers in achieving academic and social goals, and background knowledge on the English Language Learner (ELL.) Participants will learn to design assessments and adapt activities to meet the cognitive level, language proficiency and age appropriateness of students. Participants will be introduced to the vocabulary associated with teaching ELLs through a variety of web appropriate resources. Throughout each module, technology tools including apps, Chrome extensions and websites are introduced to increase awareness, skills and evaluative techniques for use with ELLs. This course provides background information in each of the four domains and then leads the participants through useful technology techniques. Participants will design age appropriate activities and assessments that address the level of English language comprehension as well as incorporate their understanding in a final project.
