Teaching the Holocaust

EDU 948

Eduspire’s courses are offered by Wilson College as graduate-level courses, and most courses can also be taken as part of the Master of Educational Technology (MET) degree program.

This course demonstrates methods and strategies for presenting the key elements necessary for understanding the Holocaust: comparative genocide, the history of anti-Semitism, pre-war Jewish life, Nazi rise to power. Other topics covered include common issues that arise in teaching the Holocaust, the use of primary sources, and effective lesson plans.

[Formerly titled Holocaust Education: Basics for Teaching the Holocaust in the Classroom]

This course, Holocaust Education: Basics for Teaching the Holocaust in the Classroom, will give educators the basic skills required to teach the Holocaust in a historical perspective. It will give the basic background information and techniques on how to present the materials in your classroom. In addition, it will help Pennsylvania teachers meet the requirements of ACT 70, The Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Right education law which went into effect in 2015.

The course will have two main parts. The first two weeks will be focused on materials and a general guideline for which information should be presented about the Holocaust. The last two weeks will show educators how to take the materials and present them in the most meaningful and effective way. The second half will also show how to properly use primary sources and which teaching strategies work best with Holocaust Education

This course is appropriate for all social studies and language arts teachers of grades 6-12.
